The Federal Aviation Administration’s order to reduce flights by up to 10% at the country’s busiest airports took effect Friday, with more than 1,000 cancellations and little commotion, but government and airline officials warn disruptions could spread in coming days.

Friday’s cuts focused primarily on shorter domestic and regional flights, largely sparing international service and flights between hub airports. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said this week the aim is to bring relief to air traffic controllers who have been working without pay as the government shutdown entered its 38th day.

On Friday, Duffy, airlines and aviation union representatives reiterated their call for lawmakers to end the shutdown.
