Detroit — James van Riemsdyk has played almost 1,100 games in his NHL career. He’s in his 17th NHL season and he’s played in Original Six cities Detroit, Boston and Toronto, and non-original outposts Philadelphia and Columbus.

He’s pretty much seen it all in the NHL, and has felt the passion and emotion from some of hockey’s most rabid fans.

But playing for an Original Six franchise again, as van Riemsdyk is doing these days with the Red Wings, means something extra for a player who daily lives and breathes the game.

And that’s why, for van Riemsdyk, being part of the Wings as they celebrate their 100th year as an organization this weekend, it’s going to be quite an honor.
