WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — After months of delays, a new emergency shelter in Woonsocket finally opened its doors on Nov. 1. The permanent shelter will now provide a space for up to 50 people in the area.
The new shelter, operated by local nonprofit OpenDoors, hopes to aid those in need in the area as costs of living rise and people are priced out of their homes.
“We provide as much wraparound support as we can," said OpenDoors Co-Executive Director Nick Horton. "We have 50 people, so [we] try to help them take the steps they want to take.”
City officials told 12 News that OpenDoors signed a lease with the city this past spring, and the goal was for the Cumberland Street shelter to open on Aug. 1.
