Jeff Capel knew coming into this season the roster he had assembled didn’t include much in the way of proven 3-point shooting. Only two players on his roster had made 30 or more 3-pointers in a season of Division I basketball, and only one, sophomore Brandin Cummings, had done it for a power-conference team. And their style of play reflected as much.

As a team, Pitt (2-0) attempted only 17 3-pointers in its season-opening win over Youngstown State, but its collective shot diet changed dramatically when Longwood (1-1) visited Petersen Events Center. In a 78-60 victory over the Lancers on Friday night, Pitt shot 30 3-pointers and made 12 to earn a 40% shooting clip. But hot shooting from beyond the arc only masked offensive problems.
