In a fresh twist to the 38-day US government shutdown, Republicans rejected Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer’s proposal to end the funding deadlock. Schumer had offered to reauthorise government funding in exchange for a one-year extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which help lower healthcare costs for millions of Americans.
