MADISON (WKOW) -- A small camper in Madison became home to more than 30 cats after their owner struggled to manage the rapidly growing number of animals. As costs began to add up, the owner had to choose between heating his home and feeding the cats.
Shelter from the Storm, a local rescue, intervened by removing more than 30 cats from the property. The group provided spay and neuter surgeries, vaccines, and microchips.
"He reached out to a lot of organizations, and unfortunately, they weren't able to help him. And after a few litters of kittens, the number just, you know, grew," said Peyton Pritzl.
Pritzl, with the rescue, said their small nonprofit is seeing cases like this more frequently. A few cats may return to the owner after treatment, but most will find new homes.
