Steve Bienkowski wanted to find a way for the Kitchener Rangers to honour the military.
After all, the Ontario Hockey League team plays in the Memorial Auditorium that was named to remember Kitchener’s war dead.
And with nearby armouries in Kitchener and Cambridge, and a tight relationship with the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada, the club felt the timing was right for something special back in 2005.
So, the team designed a unique Remembrance Day sweater.
“It was before everyone started doing it,” said Bienkowski, who retired in 2020 after 18 years as the team’s chief operating officer.
“I had known a lot of military guys. It was just something we wanted to do to honour and recognize them.”
