Gunshots were mistaken for fireworks as a teenager blasted in the street remains in hospital in a critical condition.

A 19-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot in the leg and back at about 8.50pm yesterday, on Manley Road in Huyton, Liverpool. Some residents said they assumed the noises were fireworks given the time of year. Emergency services descended on the scene, with the investigation continuing this morning.

The victim remains in hospital having suffered 'significant' injuries, the Liverpool Echo reports . A police cordon was put in place on Manley Road while officers carried out house-to-house enquiries and CCTV reviews.
