There are few moments in modern royal history where the Crown has spoken with such genuine, unmistakable cold finality.
But the latest statement on Andrew was one of those moments.
“His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew,” it said.
“Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.”
And just like that, the Duke of York ceased to exist as a functioning royal category.
He is now, quite literally, the prince formerly known as Andrew.
Events have moved faster than most people expected.
His lease on Royal Lodge, the thirty-room Windsor mansion he was once meant to occupy into the 2070s, has been formally terminated.
