A 65-year-old man tragically fell to his death at the Grand Canyon’s Guano Point after slipping over the edge.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona reported receiving a call around 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, to assist with a technical recovery.
Search and Rescue teams located the man’s body approximately 130 feet down on a scree pile.
Technical rope technicians used a lowering and raising system to recover the body, which was then transported to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The recovery effort involved multiple agencies, including the Hualapai Tribal Police Department, Hualapai Nation Fire, and Grand Canyon West Security.
“Our condolences are with his family,” the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Please respect their privacy during this time.”
Neither the man's identity nor hometown have been released.
Guano Point, located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, is a popular scenic overlook at Grand Canyon West.
The Grand Canyon itself is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in the US, stretching 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and over a mile deep.
Carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, the canyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a sacred place for Native American tribes, including the Hualapai.
The Grand Canyon attracts millions of visitors annually, but its steep cliffs and rugged terrain can pose significant dangers. Authorities urge visitors to exercise caution near the edges, as accidents can happen quickly.
