LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Nearly 40 days into the government shutdown, Kentucky leaders and community members organized a statewide food drive Saturday to help those impacted by cuts to SNAP benefits.
About 600,000 people rely on SNAP benefits across Kentucky.
With uncertainty surrounding SNAP funding, several nonprofits, state leaders and Lexington community members came together to help.
“I really think its quite simple. The only thing you have to have is a heart to give,” said Ka’Sondra Brown, Vice Chair of the organization Food Chain.
Day of action kicks off
The nonprofit Food Chain in Lexington was filled with folks looking to give Saturday as the statewide day of action kicked off. The Kentucky Democratic Party spearheaded the food drive for those impacted by recent SNAP cuts.
