Dozens of community members gathered outside the Columbia Farmers Market for a pumpkin smashing event Saturday morning.

The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture community event showcased a trebuchet, a catapult-like tool, as well as baseball bats and other pumpkin smashing tools.

"This is a place where kids can go to smash things, be destructive and not get in trouble for that," said Grace Konrad, a children's activities employee with the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture.

Not only did the event display the fun of destroying pumpkins, but it also had a larger message — the importance of composting.

Composting, nature's way of recycling, is especially important following Halloween, when pumpkins from the season begin rotting.
