GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Every year, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Veterans Day parade rolls through a coastal city.

Veterans, marching bands, and JROTC units from across the state rolled through Gulfport this morning for the 25th annual Mississippi Veterans Day Parade.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Cliff Canoy is the parade captain. As a former JROTC instructor, Canoy has been a part of the parade since its first year.

“It’s the least I can do to take this part and make sure our veterans are honored and given the recognition they deserve,” Canoy said.

This year, no active military units were a part of the parade. Canoy believes that it is a product of the government shutdown, but that didn’t stop the celebration. Many veterans think it’s even more important to show support in time
