Police arrested a 21-year-old Old Bridge man on drunken driving and assault by auto charges after his car crashed into a Hightstown bridge early Saturday, seriously injuring a passenger, police said.

Borough police came across the crash on the Peddie Bridge at 12:50 a.m. They found the car wedged between the pedestrian walkway and the guardrail, partially in the air, with one of the three passengers pinned inside, police Lt. Ben Miller said.

The small span carries East Ward Street across Peddie Lake.

All four occupants were injured, but the driver and a rear passenger declined medical treatment. Two were taken to a hospital in Trenton. One was a rear passenger who flew into the front of the vehicle, struck the dashboard and windshield and suffered a head injury, Miller said.
