State pensioners born before 1953 could be handed an extra £439 a year thanks to the Department for Work and Pensions Triple Lock. The DWP could hand state pensioners on the Old, Basic rate a weekly £8 rise - or £439 a year.

Speaking about next year's Triple Lock, former Liberal Democrats Pensions Minister Steve Webb, now partner at LCP, said: "We can now be pretty certain that the new state pension and the basic state pension will rise by 4.8 per cent."

"This will keep the headline rate of the state pension below the income tax threshold for one more year, but it will go above the tax threshold in 2027 if allowances do not rise," Mr Webb said.
