HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP — Celebrating the fifth anniversary of Grands Stepping Up (GSU) has confirmed a universal truth for founder/president Karen Barnes: It takes a village to make things happen!

Since the very day that the Drexel Hill resident started the Grands Stepping Up nonprofit organization in 2020, Barnes has been supported by the generosity and big hearts of volunteers, individuals and groups in the community, and churches and local businesses.

They’ve made it possible to give a hand up to thousands of grandparents and other kinship families in the community who find themselves suddenly in the unexpected role of raising their grandchildren or other young relative.

In Pennsylvania, 260,000 children are being raised in 84,000 grand and kinship families.
