As three Silver Creek High School students, we recently met with Mayor Joan Peck to talk about the city’s ongoing construction and infrastructure plans. We walked away realizing something important that we did not already know. Longmont is doing a lot of great work to grow, but the way construction is being handled needs to change. Many times we see roadwork projects dragging on, traffic backing up, and businesses struggling to stay accessible. We’re proud of our city’s progress, but it’s time for Longmont to focus on how they build, not just what they build.

The city’s five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) covers everything from roads to flood control to broadband expansion. These projects are essential, especially after the 2013 flood and with so many new people moving to Longmont
