A New York City firefighter has died while fighting a significant fire in Brooklyn. Patrick Brady, aged 42, suffered a cardiac arrest on the roof of a burning building located at 9407 Kings Highway in East Flatbush.
The incident occurred late on Saturday night when firefighters responded to reports of a fire that had erupted on the sixth floor of the building. Brady, an 11-year veteran of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), was among the first to arrive at the scene.
Despite immediate treatment from fellow firefighters and emergency teams, Brady was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. In addition to Brady, a second firefighter and two civilians sustained minor injuries during the incident, according to officials.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences, stating, "It takes courage to put on that uniform, to put your life at risk for others to answer the call. There's a reason we call them New York's bravest, and Patrick Brady personified that bravery."
Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker also paid tribute, saying, "The entire FDNY is heartbroken over the loss of Firefighter Patrick Brady. [He] was a dedicated public servant, and firefighting was in his blood. We are thinking of his family, friends, and fellow members as we join them in mourning this immense loss."
Brady is the second member of the FDNY to die in the line of duty within the past two weeks. He is survived by his wife, Kara, and his two brothers, Jimmy and Brian, who are also firefighters with the FDNY.
