KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The University of Tennessee’s beloved retired mascot, Smokey X, is “doing well” as he battles health challenges, according to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.
Last month, the university said he had been diagnosed with cancer after a small mass was discovered in his kidney during a biannual appointment.

On Saturday, the Hudson family, who have cared for Smokey X for years, said he is “doing well,” adding that his diet and mannerisms have remained unchanged despite the cancer diagnosis and other age-related issues.
The 14-year-old Bluetick Coonhound made his debut during the 2013 football season. He retired at the end of the 2022 season.
