The southbound lanes on the M1 Pacific Motorway are closed on the Central Coast following a truck crash and fire.

Emergency services responded to a truck crash on the M1 at Morriset about 11.30pm on Sunday.

It is understood police discovered a semi-trailer carrying onions crashed into a guard rail and caught fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW officers managed to extinguish the blaze, but crews are still working to contain a diesel spill.

“Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District have are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Diversions are in place as the southbound lanes of the M1 remain closed.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and delay non-essential travel.
