An herbal product made from leaves of a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia is raising growing concern that it may be harmful and should be regulated.
The herbal substance is kratom, and it has been used in Asia for many years. Its popularity is now growing in the U.S., where some states have restrictions and even bans on its use.
New Mexico is not one of them. Kratom products can be bought here in stores, smoke shops and online.
The state Department of Justice's consumer protection bureau has now issued a warning about kratom products. In low doses, it is reportedly a stimulant, but in larger doses, it has opioid-like effects and can be addictive.
