VISALIA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A man attempting to steal goods from a home improvement store was stopped by an off-duty police officer and employees from a nearby business, the Visalia Police Department said.

Saturday afternoon, just after 1:30 p.m., Visalia police were dispatched to the Home Depot at Demaree Street and Caldwell Avenue for a report of a theft in progress.

The caller said that someone had walked out of an emergency exit with a loaded shopping cart and became violent when confronted by the store's Loss Prevention staff.

Additionally, officers were told that an off-duty officer was involved in a physical altercation with the suspect, identified by investigators as 53-year-old Jimmy Aguirre.
