LANDOVER, Md. – Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell considered taking over play call duties for Detroit's offense when former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson left to take Chicago's head coach job this past offseason.
Campbell said this week he had a million ideas of how to get the Lions' offense playing more consistent, and one of those ideas was taking over as the play caller.
"It was just, 'Let's try something a little different,'" Campbell said after Detroit's 44-22 win against the Washington Commanders Sunday in which the Lions racked up 546 yards of total offense. "I know what I want to do and how I want to do it. Now with that being said, this is a collaborative effort now. I was taking input from (offensive coordinator) John Morton that whole time."
