GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — According to new research from Michigan State University, at least one in six people in Michigan use cannabis during pregnancy. In some parts of the state, it was as high as one in four.

"The majority of women who use it report that they do so because it helps them with relief of nausea, vomiting, relief of anxiety and stress. It's used for pain management, for better sleep," said Dr. Ban Al-Sahab, lead researcher on the study and assistant professor at MSU. "So, understanding these needs can help the provider to direct them to other safe alternatives."

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend against using cannabis during pregnancy.
