Wendy’s, the popular fast-food chain that operates almost 6,000 restaurants in the United States, including seven on Staten Island, has announced it will close hundreds of locations as part of a sweeping turnaround plan.
Interim CEO Ken Cook told CNN that a “mid-single-digit percentage” of the company’s restaurants would close, equating to about 250 to 300 locations. Wendy’s did not respond to a request for comment about which sites are slated for closure, but in other reports, the stores were described as “consistently underperforming.”
The closures will begin this year and continue through 2026.
The news comes one week after Wendy’s announced in financial filings that U.S. sales dropped 4.4% for the third quarter and are down 3.4% year to date. Same-restaurant sales growth fell 4.7%
