Maine (WABI) - Anyone who has visited Prospect Harbor is familiar with Big Jim.

The 40-foot high fisherman has quite the history in Maine.

Now, there are big plans for Big Jim.

“Back in 1950, the Maine Sardine Council was formed,” says Kevin Johnson with the Penobscot Marine Museum. “And their purpose was to promote the sardine industry.”

At that time, Maine was known as “Sardineland” with some 75 sardine canneries operating along Maine’s coast.

“One of their coolest things was to create a 40-foot high sign of a sardine fisherman, holding a sardine can that says- Welcome to Sardineland and Vacationland,” says Johnson.

The original sign greeted visitors on Route 1 in Kittery, pre I-95.
