A Canton police officer died Monday morning after being involved in a crash on his way to work, according to a story from NBC Cleveland affiliate WKYC.

Officer Dave Wolgamott was involved in an accident around 7 a.m. Monday before being taken to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away, according to Lieutenant Dennis Garren.

"This is a tragic day for our department and for our community. We ask that everyone keep Officer Wolgamott’s family, friends, and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers, and allow them time to grieve during this difficult time," said the Canton Police Department in a Facebook post.

At this time, the crash remains under investigation and officials have not released any other details.
