JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) - Wounded Nature Working Veterans and several agencies are teaming up to clean the Charleston Harbor and nearby waterways.
Eight abandoned and derelict boats were destroyed and taken to the landfill at the Limehouse Boat Landing. These vessels have long sat in our rivers and coastline, which pollutes our waters, serve as maritime hazards and eyesores. Though not all identified boats were able to be pulled inland, this cleanup marks progress after a new state law passed earlier this year.
"The new law really did kind of streamline that and it lowered some of our timelines down to where with the old law you had 45 days, but within a week or two the boat can sink or have other issues," Michael Merrill, master patrol officer for Charleston Police, said. "On this, we
