The ABC has been caught out doctoring a photo of Liberal Senator Jane Hume holding a newspaper, before issuing a lacklustre correction.

The ABC's Sunday morning talkfest, Insiders, opened with a backgrounding on the federal Coalition's ongoing net zero debate.

The voice-over suggested the Coalition had "once again made itself the story" over a picture of Ms Hume holding a front page of the Australian, featuring a picture of senior Liberals.

However, the Australian had not splashed the image over their front page and Ms Hume was never photographed displaying it with a wry grin.

The Senator was photographed last week with a 2022 edition of The Australian featuring a picture of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
