BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -One in eight Kentuckians rely on SNAP benefits, according to data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
With the funds still in limbo due to the government shutdown, local organizations are stepping up to help the 13% of Kentucky’s population put food on the table.
KY Steps Behavioral Health Services, the BG Empowerment Group and Hills Mattress & More are holding a food drive to help families that have lost their SNAP benefits or are in need of food.
“We want to focus on helping our most vulnerable individuals that are in the community,” says executive director of KY steps Irene Boamah. “Not because they are lazy, but because the benefits that they are getting is not going as far as they used to, or some are not getting benefits at all.”
