SPOKANE, Wash. — While the government is one step closer to reopening, the Spokane City Council approves an emergency declaration issued by Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown designed to help secure food and shelter for people who are struggling right now.

Mayor Brown cited federal funding risks as to why she declared a city-wide state of emergency. Monday night, it was easily passed by council. But not all members voted in favor of the declaration. The lone opponent says it didn't do enough to support those facing food insecurity.

With a 6-1 vote Monday night, the council voted in favor of Mayor Brown's emergency declaration, following the ongoing government shutdown and worry for federal funding for SNAP benefits.
