SPOKANE, Wash. — The team at Great Harvest Spokane announced it will give a free loaf of bread and two sandwiches to anyone who asks — no questions, no paperwork and no expiration date.
"This isn't charity," said Sara Kersey, the operations director of Spokane Workers Cooperative. "It's solidarity. We believe no one in our community should go hungry while wealth and power concentrate in fewer and fewer hands."
The bakery invites people who need food to tell the staff they need to "feed a friend." Staff say they do not want people to be discouraged.
"So, I don't want people to be scared. Don't be scared to ask. We are doing this because we want to. We are proud to be able to offer something, if you need a meal, come get it," says Kersey.
