A rural intersection in Victoria has become the scene of a devastating family tragedy after a car and a B-double truck collided on Tuesday, leaving three people dead and a fourth critically injured.

Emergency crews were called to the junction of Eurambeen-Streatham Road and Mount William Road at Stoneleigh, west of Ballarat, just after 9.30am.

Police say the car, which was carrying members of the same Geelong family, entered the intersection and was struck by the truck, sending the vehicle spinning before it came to rest on its side.

The impact claimed the lives of a 41-year-old man behind the wheel, a 31-year-old woman in the front passenger seat and their three-year-old son.

All three died at the scene.
