MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) -- One Champaign County village has some residents concerned after they posted an announcement for a proposed tax increase of more than 44%.
"I seen it on Facebook and it really alarmed me," said Mahomet resident Mike Seten. It's a reaction many in Mahomet are having after they saw the village's announcement projecting an increase of more than 44% in property taxes for next year.
Village officials say they understand the sticker shock when you see a number over 40 percent, but they say that will not be the increase you see when it comes to your property taxes.
WCIA met with Mahomet Village Administrator Patrick Brown to better understand what these numbers mean.
"Reality is, it's a scary number," Brown said.
