(Gray News) – Veterans Day is a time to pay tribute to those who have served or who are actively serving in the U.S. military.
The federal holiday began on Nov. 11, 1918, when a truce between the U.S. allies and Germany to end World War I was signed on the 11 th day, of the 11 th month, at the 11 th hour.
At the time, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it Armistice Day. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower officially renamed it Veterans Day.
Many restaurants and coffee chains are offering freebies and discounts to veterans and active-duty service members with a military ID. Many offers are limited to dine-in only guests as well.
