Canada has lost its status as a measles-free country more than 25 years after eradicating the virus, but Quebec’s Health Ministry says the province has remained measles free since April.
Ongoing outbreaks have been reported in nine provinces and the Northwest Territories. While the hardest-hit regions are Ontario and Alberta, with case numbers in the thousands, the province of Quebec has recorded dozens of measles cases since 2023. Before then, measles hadn’t been recorded in the country since 2019, according to Health Canada’s measles monitoring page.
According to the Quebec Health Ministry, the last new measles case reported in the province dates back to March 18, 2025.
