BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - The City of Birmingham is investing $1 million to expand mental health services across Birmingham City Schools, ensuring every school has a full-time counselor.
City council members said studies show that about 18% of students who receive these services have lower suspension rates and higher grades.
There are more than 40 schools in the district, and more than half only have part-time counselors who must divide their time among multiple campuses. With this new funding, each school will have its own full-time counselor.
Dr. Taqua Lewis, coordinator of guidance and counseling for Birmingham City Schools, said part-time counselors often had to juggle multiple schedules.
