A man from Mexico in the U.S. illegally since 2011 is facing a federal criminal charge after he was arrested Sept. 21 on suspicion of drunken driving on Maui.
Esteban Tlachi Valazquez was ordered released by Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Kenneth Mansfield on an $25,000 unsecured bond to a halfway house on Nov. 5 after he was charged with a single count of reentering the country after being removed.
Tlachi Velazquez will be monitored by GPS technology. Mansfield denied a motion by the U.S.Department of Justice to detain Tlachi Velazquez without bail until trial.
He had been deported Feb. 3, 2011, by a U.S. immigration judge after a misdemeanor prostitution conviction in New York City. Tlachi Velazquez was told that he could not return to the United States for at least 10 years.
