SANTA FE, N.M. —
Santa Fe city councilors voted late Wednesday night to increase the city's minimum wage to $17.50 an hour by 2027, with future raises tied to housing costs.
The measure passed on a 5-2 vote after more than an hour of discussion.
Since 2003, Santa Fe has used a city living wage, which increased to $15 an hour in March. The state's minimum wage is $12 an hour, while the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
According to research included with the proposal , this raise would give full-time employees $5,200 more per year, and research indicates "Santa Fe's living wage policy is likely to achieve its core goal: raising earnings for thousands of low-wage workers while producing only modest and manageable adjustments for employers."
