THERESA, New York (WWNY) - Thousands of gallons of sewage, which wasn’t fully treated, made its way into the Indian River earlier this month.

It stated that around 5,000 gallons of sewage, described as partially treated but not disinfected, was discharged into the Indian River

It started at the village of Theresa’s wastewater treatment plant, where water that hadn’t fully been treated began seeping into the river over the course of several hours.

What caused it? A broken part in the village’s wastewater treatment machine, a drive bearing that’s integral to the treatment process, and village officials hadn’t noticed the signs that it was on the verge of breaking.
