Metallica is set to cause traffic chaos as authorities issues preemptive warning to commuters to plan ahead of time, before 70,000 "buzzing" rock band fans gridlock Sydney Olympic Park.

Transport for NSW Coordinator-General Howard Collins said "heavy traffic is expected" in and around Olympic Park on Saturday.

Metallica’s record-breaking M72 World Tour will hit Accor Stadium this weekend, with support acts Evanescence and Suicidal Tendencies to warm up the huge crowd.

Public gates are set to open at 5pm with the show commencing at 6pm.

Mr Collins said while there was no major trackwork taking place, fans travelling from the regions were "encouraged" to plan their trip.
