PEACH COUNTY, Ga. — After years of delays and debate, Peach County has officially opened its first dedicated animal control shelter.

What began as an idea more than a decade ago has become a reality for county residents and local animal-welfare groups.

County officials said the new facility marks a turning point.

“Twelve years later,” Commissioner Wade Yoder said, as the ribbon was cut during the grand opening.

The shelter, built on nearly 180 acres of county land, stands ready with 28 kennels to handle stray pickups, adoptions and cruelty cases.

Jessica McAbee, the shelter’s supervisor, said the team’s goal is to provide both care and education for the community.
