This new film starring Rose Byrne as a fraught mother carrying the burden of her sick child and broken apartment alone is billed as a comedy, but plenty of people will struggle to see the joke, because this is one of the blackest black comedies I've seen in some time.

The laughs, and I did laugh a bunch, are the hysterical laughs that come with complete exhaustion and desperation, the laughter of relief that comes at the end of extreme stress, but this is where the filmmakers want to get you.
