A seriously injured Victorian car wash co-owner called for his own ambulance after being slashed in a horror machete attack.

Police have been told the victim was at the car wash on Mount Alexander Road in Essendon when a vehicle pulled up to the business about 9am.

The armed offender, who was wearing a balaclava and dark clothing, then approached the 43-year-old Doreen man and slashed his hand with a machete, a Victoria Police statement said.

The injured man attempted to run away before the attacker slashed him again to the upper body.

The offender then fled in the vehicle – described as a dark SUV.

First responders rushed to the scene and took the victim to hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
