MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police Chief John Patterson says one of his top priorities in the next budget cycle will be to secure funding for body-worn cameras in the 2027 city budget.
It comes as a last-minute budget amendment to fund the staffing for the program overwhelmingly failed at Tuesday's Common Council meeting.
The amendment to the budget would have gotten rid of the Office of the Independent Monitor (OIM), which is monitored by the Police Civilian Oversight Board (PCOB), and funded positions needed for police body-worn cameras.
It failed on a vote of 17-3, with the alders who proposed it the only ones in favor of the change.
Chief Patterson was at Tuesday's Common Council meeting and spoke with 27 News Wednesday to discuss his support for the technology.
