Southampton are set to appoint interim boss Tonda Eckert as their new manager, talkSPORT understands.

Eckert, 32, has won both of his games in charge since stepping up from under-21 boss to fill the void left by Will Still .

His most senior role was as assistant manager at Barnsley and Genoa.

Gary O'Neil had emerged as a possible candidate for the job, while talkSPORT understands the players and staff would have welcomed Russell Martin being reappointed.

The club's hierarchy have been long-term admirers of Frank Lampard, but he is currently at high-flying Coventry.

Stoke's Mark Robins is another who scored well in their data-led recruitment model.

However, Eckert is going to be given the job full-time.
