OMAHA, Neb. —

Students and loved ones gathered at the University of Kansas on Wednesday to honor the life of Elsa McGrain, a 20-year-old Omaha native, as William Klingler, the man accused of hitting and killing her, appeared in court for the first time.

McGrain was an active member of her college ministry and the Chi Omega sorority and was set to graduate next year.

"She truly was radiant in the way she lived, in the way she loved, and in the way she made everyone around her feel seen," said a speaker at the memorial.

Prosecutors have charged Klingler with multiple counts, including leaving the scene of a fatality accident and driving while suspended. However, involuntary manslaughter was not among the charges. McGrain's great aunt attended the court proceedings.
