It’s the update everyone was hoping for.

Six newborn puppies found stuffed inside a taped Nike shoebox along a walking trail in Bealeton have been reunited with their mother, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office announced.

The sheriff’s office shared the update days after the pups were found on Saturday, Nov. 8, inside a yellow-taped shoebox lined with a towel and punctured with air holes.

The box had been left near the railroad tracks along the path, officials said.

Animal Control Officers said the puppies — believed to be only days old — were rescued just in time as temperatures dropped across the region. They were placed in medical foster care through the Fauquier SPCA as staff worked to save their lives.

Photos released by the sheriff’s office showed the heartbreaking discovery: six fragile puppies curled together in the shoebox, and a deputy gently cradling two of them after they were found.

On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office delivered the news animal lovers were waiting for.

“We CAN share with you that the puppies and their momma have been reunited.”

Officials added that the investigation remains “open and ongoing,” and that no additional details will be released at this time.

The update came with a photo of the mother — a gentle-looking brown dog — curled protectively around her litter.

Authorities are still seeking information about who abandoned the puppies.
