ITV's resident medic and NHS GP, Dr Amir Khan , has issued a warning to anyone taking a commonly prescribed medication called omeprazole.
The drug is frequently given to patients suffering from excess stomach acid, which can cause problems including heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers, among other ailments.
Omeprazole is also known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).
It helps to ease symptoms and gives damaged digestive tissues a chance to recover.
Complete symptom relief may take anywhere from several days to several weeks of regular use, depending on the condition being treated, reports Birmingham Live .
Using omeprazole long-term is typically deemed safe for certain health conditions when prescribed by a healthcare professional.
