BISMARCK — A University of Mary hockey player’s career is over after he was severely injured by a skate blade in a game last month.

Michael Heitkamp, a sixth-year senior, suffered a skull fracture after a collision with a Minot State player on Oct. 31, his sister Danielle Heitkamp wrote in a GoFundMe post. As of Thursday, Nov. 13, donations to the site have raised more than $28,000 for his hospital expenses.

“He’s doing well,” UMary hockey coach Daniel Huntley told The Forum on Thursday. “He came to our game on Saturday (again against Minot State) and gave our guys a little surprise visit in the locker room before the game and I think it gave our guys a little inspiration. We ended up coming back and beating those guys 2-1.”
